Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be
illustrated by the story of...
「天の国はまた次のようにたとえられる。


A man going on a long trip. 
ある人が旅行に出かけるとき、

He called together his servants
and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. 
僕たちを呼んで、自分の財産を預けた。


in proportion to their abilities
それぞれの力に応じて、


He gave five talents to one, two talents to another,
and one talent to the last.
一人には五タラントン、一人には二タラントン、
もう一人には一タラントンを預けて旅に出かけた。




The servant who received the five talents began
to invest the money and earned five more.
早速、五タラントン預かった者は出て行き、
それで商売をして、ほかに五タラントンをもうけた。


The servant with two talents also went to work
and earned two more.
同じように、二タラントン預かった者も、
ほかに二タラントンをもうけた。

 
But the servant who received the one talent
dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money.
しかし、一タラントン預かった者は、出て行って穴を掘り、
主人の金を隠しておいた。



After a long time
さて、かなり日がたってから、

their master returned from his trip
僕たちの主人が帰って来て、


and called them to give an account of his money. 
彼らと清算を始めた。


 

The servant to whom he had entrusted the talents 
came forward with five more and said,
まず、五タラントン預かった者が進み出て、
ほかの五タラントンを差し出して言った。


‘Master, you gave me five talents to invest,
and I have earned five more.’
『御主人様、五タラントンお預けになりましたが、御覧ください。
ほかに五タラントンもうけました。』
 


The master was full of praise.
‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.
主人は言った。『忠実な良い僕だ。よくやった。


You have been faithful in handling this small amount,
お前は少しのものに忠実であったから、


so now I will give you many more responsibilities.
多くのものを管理させよう。


Let’s celebrate together!'
主人と一緒に喜んでくれ。』



The servant who had received the two talents
came forward and said,
次に、二タラントン預かった者も進み出て言った。


‘Master, you gave me two talnts to invest,
and I have earned two more.’
『御主人様、二タラントンお預けになりましたが、御覧ください。
ほかに二タラントンもうけました。』
 

The master said,
‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.
主人は言った。『忠実な良い僕だ。よくやった。


You have been faithful in handling this small amount,
お前は少しのものに忠実であったから、


so now I will give you many more responsibilities.
多くのものを管理させよう。


Let’s celebrate together!
主人と一緒に喜んでくれ。』



Then the servant with the one talent came and said,
ところで、一タラントン預かった者も進み出て言った。


‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man,
harvesting crops you didn’t plant
and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate.
『御主人様、あなたは蒔かない所から刈り取り、
散らさない所からかき集められる厳しい方だと
知っていましたので、


I was afraid I would lose your money,
so I hid it in the earth.
恐ろしくなり、出かけて行って、
あなたのタラントンを地の中に隠しておきました。


Look, here is your money back.’
御覧ください。これがあなたのお金です。』



But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant!
主人は答えた。『怠け者の悪い僕だ。

If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant
わたしが蒔かない所から刈り取り、

and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate,
散らさない所からかき集めることを知っていたのか。

why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank?
それなら、わたしの金を銀行に入れておくべきであった。

At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’
そうしておけば、帰って来たとき、利息付きで返してもらえたのに。
