“All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan.
“Do whatever you want with everything he possesses,
but don’t harm him physically.”
「彼の財産のことは、おまえの好きなようにしてよい。
ただし、彼の体に触れてはならんぞ。」
So Satan left the lord’s presence.
こうして、サタンは出て行きました。
One day when Job’s sons and daughters
were feasting at the oldest brother’s house,
それからしばらくして、ヨブの息子、娘たちが
長兄の家で祝宴を張っている時、
悲劇の幕が切って落とされました。

使者がヨブの家に飛んで来て、悲報を伝えたのです。
“Your oxen were plowing, with the donkeys
feeding beside them, when the Sabeans raided us.
They stole all the animals and killed all the farmhands.
I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
「た、たいへんです。 牛が畑を耕し、そばでろばが草を食べているところへ、
いきなりシェバ人が襲いかかりました。 家畜はさらわれ、作男たちは皆殺しです。
どうにか助かったのは私ひとりです。」

彼の話がまだ終わらないうちに、別の使いが、
いっそう悪い知らせを伝えました。
“The fire of God has fallen from heaven and
burned up your sheep and all the shepherds.
I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
「恐ろしいことです。 神の火が天から下って、
羊と牧童を残らず焼き殺しました。
難を免れたのは私だけです。」
While he was still speaking,
a third messenger arrived with this news:
この男が報告し終えないうちに、
もう一人の使者が息せき切って駆け込んで来ました。
“Three bands of Chaldean raiders have stolen
your camels and killed your servants.
I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
「だんな様ーっ。 三組のカルデヤ人の野盗が
らくだを奪い、召使たちを殺したのです。
私ひとりが、なんとか逃げて来ました。」
While he was still speaking,
another messenger arrived with this news:
もう一人の使者が息せき切って駆け込んで来ました。
“Three bands of Chaldean raiders have stolen

さらにもう一人が駆けつけました。

「お子さんたちが大へんです。
皆さん、ご長男の家で宴会を開いておいででした。
Suddenly, a powerful wind swept in from the wilderness
and hit the house on all sides.
The house collapsed, and all your children are dead.
I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
すると突然、砂漠の方から大風が吹きつけて、
家を直撃したのです。 それで屋根が落ち、
その下敷きになって、皆さんお亡くなりに......。
私だけが、どうにか命拾いをしました。」
Job stood up and tore his robe in grief.
Then he shaved his head and
fell to the ground to worship. He said,
さらにもう一人が駆けつけました。

「お子さんたちが大へんです。
皆さん、ご長男の家で宴会を開いておいででした。

すると突然、砂漠の方から大風が吹きつけて、
家を直撃したのです。 それで屋根が落ち、

私だけが、どうにか命拾いをしました。」

悲しみのあまり上着を引き裂き、地にひれ伏して、
神様に言いました。
死ぬ時も、何一つ持って行けません。
ですから、神様はそれを取り上げる権利もお持ちです。
いつでも、どんな時でも、
神様の御名がたたえられますように。」
悲しみのあまり上着を引き裂き、地にひれ伏して、
神様に言いました。
“I came naked from my mother’s womb,
and I will be naked when I leave.
「生まれた時、私は裸でした。 and I will be naked when I leave.
死ぬ時も、何一つ持って行けません。
The lord gave me what I had,
and the lord has taken it away.
Praise the name of the lord!”
私の持ち物は全部、神様が下さったものです。 and the lord has taken it away.

ですから、神様はそれを取り上げる権利もお持ちです。
いつでも、どんな時でも、
神様の御名がたたえられますように。」
In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God.
このような事態になっても、ヨブは罪を犯したり、
神様を悪しざまに言ったりしませんでした。
