There once was a man named Job
who lived in the land of Uz.
ウツの国にヨブという人が住んでいました。
He was blameless—a man of complete integrity.
He feared God and stayed away from evil.
この人は人格者で、神様を敬い、悪から遠ざかっていました。
He had seven sons and three daughters.
子宝に恵まれ、息子が七人、娘が三人もいました。
He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen,
and 500 female donkeys.
それに、羊七千頭、らくだ三千頭、五百くびきの牛、雌ろば五百頭がいる上に、
He also had many servants.
He was, in fact, the richest person in that entire area.
大ぜいの召使をかかえる億万長者でした。
名実ともに、その地方きっての大牧場主だったのです。

One day the members of the heavenly court
came to present themselves before the LORD
ある日、御使いたちが神様の前に出た時のことです。
and the Accuser, Satan, came with them.
その中に、告発者のサタンもいました。
“Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan.
神様はサタンに問いただしました。
「おまえはどこから来たのか。」
「おまえはどこから来たのか。」
Satan answered the lord,
“I have been patrolling the earth,
watching everything that’s going on.”
“I have been patrolling the earth,
watching everything that’s going on.”
「地球のパトロールから帰って来たところでさ。」
Then the lord asked Satan,
“Have you noticed my servant Job?
「わたしのしもべヨブを知っているか。
He is the finest man in all the earth.
He is blameless—a man of complete integrity.
He fears God and stays away from evil.”
彼は世界でいちばんの人格者だ。
神は敬うし、一点の非の打ちどころもない。」
Satan replied to the LORD,
“Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God.
You have always put a wall of protection around him
and his home and his property.”
Then the lord asked Satan,
“Have you noticed my servant Job?
「わたしのしもべヨブを知っているか。
He is the finest man in all the earth.
He is blameless—a man of complete integrity.
He fears God and stays away from evil.”
彼は世界でいちばんの人格者だ。
神は敬うし、一点の非の打ちどころもない。」
Satan replied to the LORD,
“Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God.

and his home and his property.”
「あたり前ですよ。 あなたが特別ひいきにしているんだから。
あなたはいつも、彼とその家庭、持ち物を守っているじゃないですか。
You have made him prosper in everything he does.
Look how rich he is!
それに、彼のすることは何でも栄えるように目をかけている。
これじゃあ、金がうなるほどあっても不思議はない。
But reach out and take away everything he has,
and he will surely curse you to your face!”
あなたを拝むふりをして当然ですよ。
試しに、やっこさんの財産を取り上げてみるんですな。
きっとあなたをのろいますぜ。」
あなたはいつも、彼とその家庭、持ち物を守っているじゃないですか。
