In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,

and the Word was God.
初めに言があった。言は神と共にあった。言は神であった。

He existed in the beginning with God.
この言は初めに神と共にあった。

God created everything through him,

and nothing was created except through him.
すべてのものは、これによってできた。
できたもののうち、一つとしてこれによらないものはなかった。

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
この言に命があった。そしてこの命は人の光であった。

The one who is the true light,
who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
すべての人を照すまことの光があって、世にきた。

He came into the very world he created,
but the world didn’t recognize him.
彼は世にいた。そして、世は彼によってできたのであるが、
世は彼を知らずにいた。

He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.
彼は自分のところにきたのに、自分の民は彼を受けいれなかった。

But to all who believed him and accepted him,
he gave the right to become children of God.
しかし、彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、
彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである。

They are reborn—not with a physical birth
resulting from human passion or plan,
but a birth that comes from God.
それらの人は、血すじによらず、肉の欲によらず
、また、人の欲にもよらず、ただ神によって生れたのである。

So the Word became human
and made his home among us.
そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った。
