If you come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has strayed away,
take it back to its owner.
あなたの敵の牛あるいはろばが迷っているのに出会ったならば、
必ず彼のもとに連れ戻さければならない。

If you see that the donkey of someone
who hates you has collapsed under its load,
do not walk by. Instead, stop and help.
もし、あなたを憎む者のろばが
荷物の下に倒れ伏しているのを見た場合、
それを見捨てておいてはならない。必ず彼と共に助け起こさねばならない。

‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
あなたがたも聞いてるとおり、『隣人を愛し、敵を憎め』と命じられている。

But I say, love your enemies!
Do good to those who hate you.
Pray for those who persecute you!
しかし、わたしは言っておく。
敵を愛し、自分を迫害する者のために祈りなさい。

In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.
For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good,
and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.
あなたがたの天の父の子となるためである。
父は悪人にも善人にも太陽を昇らせ、
正しい者にも正しくない者にも雨を降るさせてくださるからである。

If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that?
Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.
自分を愛してくれる人を愛したところで、あなたにどんな報いがあろうか。
異邦人でさえ、同じことをそているではないか。

If you are kind only to your friends,

how are you different from anyone else?
Even pagans do that.
自分の兄弟にだけ挨拶したところで、どんな優れたことをしたことになろうか。
異邦人でさえ、同じことをしているではないか。

But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.
だから、あなたがたの天の父が完全であられるように。
あなたがたも完全な者となりなさい。
