The Lord now said to Moses,
神様はモーセに命じました。
　
“Send out men to explore the land of Canaan,
the land I am giving to the Israelites.
Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes.”
「いずれはおまえたちのものになるカナンの国に、まずスパイを送り込みなさい。　
各部族から一名ずつ選ぶのだ。」


So Moses did as the Lord commanded him.
He sent out twelve men, all tribal leaders of Israel,
from their camp in the wilderness of Paran.
この時、一行はパランの荒野に野営していました。　
モーセは神様の命じたとおり、十二人のスパイを選びました。

So they went up and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin
as far as Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.
彼らは、南はツィンの荒野から北はハマテに近いレホブまで、探りました。


Going north, they passed through the Negev and arrived at Hebron,
where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai—all descendants of Anak—lived.
(The ancient town of Hebron was founded seven years before
the Egyptian city of Zoan.)
北へ進み、まずネゲブを通り、ヘブロンに着きました。
そこには、アナク(巨人)の子孫の
アヒマン族、シェシャイ族、タルマイ族が住んでいました。　
ヘブロンは、エジプトのタニスより七年も前に建てられた、非常に古い町です。


When they came to the valley of Eshcol,
they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that
it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them !
They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs.
それから、現在のエシュコルの谷に来て、ぶどうを一ふさ切り取りました。　
とても大きなふさで、棒に通して二人でかつぐほどです。　
ざくろやいちじくの実も幾つか取りました。


That place was called the valley of Eshcol (which means “cluster”),
because of the cluster of grapes the Israelite men cut there.
その時から、イスラエル人は、そこをエシュコル〔「一ふさのぶどう」の意〕の谷
と呼ぶようになりました。　そこでぶどうを一ふさ切り取ったからです。
