For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down
(that is, when we die and leave this earthly body),
we will have a house in heaven,
an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.
わたしたちの住んでいる地上の幕屋がこわれると、神からいただく建物、
すなわち天にある、人の手によらない永遠の家が備えてあることを、
わたしたちは知っている。
We grow weary in our present bodies,
and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.
そして、天から賜わるそのすみかを、上に着ようと切に望みながら、
この幕屋の中で苦しみもだえている。
For we will put on heavenly bodies;
we will not be spirits without bodies.
それを着たなら、裸のままではいないことになろう。
While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh,
but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us.
Rather, we want to put on our new bodies
so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.
この幕屋の中にいるわたしたちは、重荷を負って苦しみもだえている。
それを脱ごうと願うからではなく、その上に着ようと願うからであり、
それによって、死ぬべきものがいのちにのまれてしまうためである。
God himself has prepared us for this,
and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.
わたしたちを、この事にかなう者にして下さったのは、神である。そして、神はその保証として御霊をわたしたちに賜わったのである。
So we are always confident, even though we know that
as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord.
だから、わたしたちはいつも心強い。
そして、肉体を宿としている間は主から離れていることを、よく知っている。
For we live by believing and not by seeing.
わたしたちは、見えるものによらないで、信仰によって歩いているのである。
Yes, we are fully confident,
and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies,
for then we will be at home with the Lord.
それで、わたしたちは心強い。
そして、むしろ肉体から離れて主と共に住むことが、願わしいと思っている。
So whether we are here in this body or away from this body,
our goal is to please him.
そういうわけだから、肉体を宿としているにしても、それから離れているにしても、
ただ主に喜ばれる者となるのが、心からの願いである。
For we must all stand before Christ to be judged.
We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil
we have done in this earthly body.
なぜなら、わたしたちは皆、キリストのさばきの座の前にあらわれ、善であれ悪であれ、
自分の行ったことに応じて、それぞれ報いを受けねばならないからである。
