American soldiers don't really know the land.
米国の兵士たちはまったくあの地形を知らない。


.... don't understand what they're up against.
自分達が何かと戦うのかが判らない。


And It's a forbidding place: dry or wet, but always hot.
そしてあの気持ち悪い場所は、乾燥しておりじめじめし、何時も暑い所だ。


And tunnels .......
そして（クチ）地下道・・・


The tunnels turn the land itself into the enemy.
地下道は地形そのものを敵に変える。


Since the land hides the ¹Vietcong fighters
only to deliver them virtually anywhere,
producing surprise attacks and sudden death.
地形がベトコンの兵士を事実上何処にも現われるようにして
急襲と猝死を引き起こしたので、


The resulting terror gives the land
a face of menace in the minds of the Americans.
惹起されるそのテロによってあの地は
アメリカ人の頭の中に威嚇の像を与えてくれた。



When one of their number is killed by a sniper,
自分達の仲間の一人が狙撃兵によって倒れた時、

they order the destruction of nearby village.
彼らは近くに在る村の破壊命令を下す。


Then sit on a hill and watch as shell after shell,
その後は丘に座り、砲弾を次々に（撃ったり）

alternating high explosives and incendiary white phosphorus,
HE爆弾と焼夷弾で代わる代わる攻撃しながら

pulverize the village.
徹底的にあの村を打ち砕く。

A cockroach couldn't survive.
ごきぶり一匹さえ生き残れないだろう。

Why do they do it?
何故そうするのか。


It isn't a military target, only a village.
軍事施設ではないしただの村だろ。


Did the bullet come from the village?
銃弾があの村から飛んできたか。

Not exactly, although he was a soldier sheltered by village.
たとえ、あいつが村の中に隠されていたとしても、いや、違うだろう。

Is he still there?
やつはまだ、あそこにいるのか。

No, the place is deserted when they look for revenge.
いや、彼らが複数を行おうとした時、あの場所は捨てられたんだ。


But the real target is the physical village.
それでも、真のターゲットはあの実存の村だ。

As place, as center of mistery and threat,
未知と威脅の場所として、

As alien environment,
不慣れな環境として、


As generic home of potential enemies and uncertain friends.
仮想の敵と忌まわしい友の代名詞として。


The squad pours its fear and anger into this small village.
（アメリカ軍の）小隊は恐怖と怒りをこの小さな村に降りしきる。


If they can't overcome the larger geography,
彼らが大きな地形を制圧できないなら、

they can at least express their rage against the smaller.
せめて、小さなものには例の激怒を迸れるだろう。
