Both of them had propsed.
民主党の候補であるスティーブン・ダグラスと
共和党からのエイブラハム・リンカーン。
二人ともメアリー・トッドと会った。
二人とも彼女と同期間付き合っていた。
二人とも彼女にプロポーズした。

Douglas's political prospects seemed
a hundred times brighter than Lincoln's.
Douglas was already Secretary of the State, While

Lincoln was only a struggling lawyer hardly able to pay a bill.
リンカーンは税金をまともに納めることも出来ない貧しい弁護士であった。


Douglas was far more of a ladies' man.
He had more personal charm, better manners.
ダグラスのほうがぐっと女性にモテル男だった。
彼のほうががもっと魅力と礼儀が有った。

Mary looked at her mirror, whispering  "Mary Todd Douglas."
and dreamed herself waltzing with him in the White House.
メアリーは鏡を見ながら呟いた、「メアリー・トッド・ダグラス」。
それに想像した。彼と白亜館でワルツを踊っている自分自身を。
