1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit
into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil.
イエスは御霊によって荒野に導かれた。悪魔に試みられるためである。

2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.
そして、四十日四十夜、断食をし、そののち空腹になられた。

3 During that time the devilt came and said to him,
“If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”
すると試みる者がきて言った、
「もしあなたが神の子であるなら、これらの石がパンになるように命じてごらんなさい」。

4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,
‘People do not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
イエスは答えて言われた、「『人はパンだけで生きるものではなく、
神の口から出る一つ一つの言で生きるものである』と書いてある」。
 

2 Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness
for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character,
and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.
あなたの神、主がこの四十年の間、荒野であなたを導かれた
そのすべての道を覚えなければならない。それはあなたを苦しめて、
あなたを試み、あなたの心のうちを知り、あなたがその命令を守るか、
どうかを知るためであった。 

3 Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna,
a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors.
He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone;
rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
それで主はあなたを苦しめ、あなたを飢えさせ、あなたも知らず、
あなたの先祖たちも知らなかったマナをもって、あなたを養われた。
人はパンだけでは生きず、人は主の口から出るすべてのことばによって
生きることをあなたに知らせるためであった。

4 For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out,
and your feet didn’t blister or swell.
この四十年の間、あなたの着物はすり切れず、あなたの足は、はれなかった。
