All of King Solomon’s drinking cups were solid gold,
as were all the utensils in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
They were not made of silver,
for silver was considered worthless in Solomon’s day!

ソロモン王が飲むときに用いた器は皆金であった。
またレバノンの森の家の器も皆純金であって、銀のものはなかった。
銀はソロモンの世には顧みられなかった。


The king made silver as plentiful in Jerusalem as stone.
And valuable cedar timber was as common as the sycamore-fig trees
that grow in the foothills of Judah.

王はエルサレムで、銀を石のように用い、
香柏を平地にあるいちじく桑のように多く用いた。

Now King Solomon loved many foreign women.
Besides Pharaoh’s daughter,
he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon,
and from among the Hittites.

ソロモン王は多くの外国の女を愛した。
すなわちパロの娘、モアブびと、アンモンびと、
エドムびと、シドンびと、ヘテびとの女を愛した。


He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines.
And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the LORD.

彼には王妃としての妻七百人、そばめ三百人があった。
その妻たちが彼の心を転じたのである。

These are the words of the Teacher,
King David’s son, who ruled in Jerusalem.

ダビデの子(ソロモン)、エルサレムの王である伝道者の言葉。


“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher,
“completely meaningless!”

伝道者は言う、空の空、空の空、いっさいは空である。



But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish,
it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind.
There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.

そこで、わたしはわが手のなしたすべての事、
およびそれをなすに要した労苦を顧みたとき、見よ、皆、空であって、
風を捕えるようなものであった。日の下には益となるものはないのである。
