Then the wood-carver measures a block of wood
and draws a pattern on it.
He works with chisel and plane
and carves it into a human figure.
He gives it human beauty
and puts it in a little shrine.

木の細工人は線を引き
鉛筆でえがき、かんなで削り、コンパスでえがき、
それを人の美しい姿にしたがって人の形に造り、
家の中に安置する。



He cuts down cedars;
he selects the cypress and the oak;
he plants the pine in the forest
to be nourished by the rain.

彼は香柏を切り倒し、あるいはかしの木、
あるいはかしわの木を選んで、
それを林の木の中で強く育てる。
あるいは香柏を植え、雨にそれを育てさせる。



Then he uses part of the wood to make a fire.
With it he warms himself and bakes his bread.
Then—yes, it’s true—he takes the rest of it
and makes himself a god to worship!
He makes an idol
and bows down in front of it!

こうして人はその一部をとって、たきぎとし、
これをもって身を暖め、またこれを燃やしてパンを焼き、
また他の一部を神に造って拝み、
刻んだ像に造ってその前にひれ伏す。


He burns part of the tree to roast his meat
and to keep himself warm.
He says, “Ah, that fire feels good.”

その半ばは火に燃やし、その半ばで肉を煮て食べ、
あるいは肉をあぶって食べ飽き、また身を暖めて言う、
「ああ、暖まった、熱くなった」と。


Then he takes what’s left
and makes his god: a carved idol!
He falls down in front of it,
worshiping and praying to it.
“Rescue me!” he says.
“You are my god!”

そしてその余りをもって神を造って偶像とし、
その前にひれ伏して拝み、これに祈って、
「あなたはわが神だ、わたしを救え」と言う。


Such stupidity and ignorance!
Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see.
Their minds are shut, and they cannot think.

これらの人は知ることがなく、また悟ることがない。
その目はふさがれて見ることができず、
その心は鈍くなって悟ることができない。
